If you have spent time googling PE, you have probably seen a lot of jargon. Here is a simple glossary to make the language less intimidating.
Common terms
- Premature ejaculation, ejaculation that happens sooner than desired, often with reduced sense of control and distress
- Lifelong PE, present since early sexual experiences
- Acquired PE, develops later after a period of more typical control
- Arousal regulation, the ability to notice and influence how quickly arousal escalates
- Performance anxiety, worry or pressure that increases nervous system speed
- Stop start, pausing when close to reduce intensity, then continuing
- Early cues, the first signs you are escalating, faster breathing, tension, urgency
- Distress, the emotional impact, frustration, shame, avoidance
When to speak with a clinician
If PE is persistent, causing distress, or affecting your relationship, a clinician can help you map what is driving it and what options may be appropriate.
